Emergency Dentistry
Dental emergencies can vary in nature and severity. Badly infected teeth if left untreated can cause swelling and pain. If the swelling is smaller in size or localised we can manage it here in private practice. If you haven’t been able to see the dentist and have an infected tooth it can cause a swollen face (especially under the eye lid and near the nose or in the lower jawline), it can lead to swollen glands, difficulty swallowing and breathing and in this scenario it is best to present to your local hospital emergency department. Our nearest hospital is Westmead, please call (02) 8890 5555.
SWELLING AND PAIN:
dental related pain can come from the teeth and the gums. Pain and swelling can be mild or can be severe and cause loss of sleep and chewing ability. Example: wisdom tooth pain usually results from the gums surrounding the tooth becoming inflamed and swollen as the teeth are erupting through, this sometimes causes pericoronitis and limits your ability to open your mouth and also sometimes affects your swallowing.
BROKEN OR FRACTURED TEETH:
teeth and fillings can break during chewing or due to excessive forces like teeth clenching and grinding. Although not truly classed as a dental emergency, addressing the problem early is crucial to save your tooth and avoid future pain. On the rare occasion, some fractured teeth do require extraction, please consult with your friendly Parramatta Dental Studio dentists.
TRAUMA:
sports related injuries and accidental “knocks” do happen causing damage to your teeth and gums. The nerve inside a traumatised tooth can become non-vital and require root canal therapy to remove inflamed nerve tissues and retain the tooth. (See image: young person knocked his front teeth on the bed head and required root canal therapy, he had pain and a large swelling on the palate). Some of these teeth can be fractured and in the worse case scenario require extraction and future replacement with a denture, bridge of dental implant. Your dentist is the best person to seek advice from. Many cases require regularly review and even splinting to stabilise.
BROKEN OR LOST APPLIANCES:
broken dentures can be repaired in many cases. If you require a replacement denture then several appointments are required before you can have your new denture fitted. Depending on the situation broken or lost retainers can be repaired or replaced. Teeth can move and shift daily, so seeking advice and treatment early is important.
SAME DAY APPOINTMENTS:
we do our best to see you in a timely manner, for true dental emergencies or if we cannot fit you in on the same day, please call our Cabramatta practice on (02) 9726 4313 or Westmead hospital on (02) 8890 5555.
