      Bruxism & Occlusal Splints

      Bruxism & Occlusal Splints

A lot of patients either are aware of or have been told they clench or grind their teeth when they are under stress or when they are concentrating. Long term clenching and grinding your teeth during sleep can lead to wear and tear i.e. early loss of enamel. Some patients even experience the following symptoms such as head, neck and shoulder muscle aches, crack lines and fractured teeth, sensitivity to hot, cold and sweet foods due to the exposed dentine (see image). Excessive tooth wear is difficult to fix. Your teeth become gradually worn and by the time you develop symptoms, the damage is difficult to reverse, in severe cases, you require a full mouth reconstruction. By wearing a custom-made occlusal splint or nightguard we are reducing the rate of progression of the enamel wear as well as decreasing the pressure on the natural teeth and jaw joints.
      PREVENTION:
Occlusal splints and nightguards protect your enamel and reduce the rate of wear and tear. The appliance helps reduce the risk of fractures and cracks developing or propagating in your teeth and protects any existing fillings, crowns, bridges and implants that you may have.
      WHY CUSTOM MADE?
Because we are dealing with your “bite” and how your upper and lower teeth meet, it is especially important for your occlusal splint to be custom made and the bite adjusted until comfortable by a trained professional. Purchasing products online without this care taken can result in unwanted damage such as bite changes and unnecessary pressure on your teeth and jaw joints.
      WHAT’S INVOLVED?
You need two appointments, the first is to for an intra-oral scan or mould of your upper and lower jaws and a record of how your teeth come together. The second appointment will be several days later, to have your occlusal splint fitted.
